Women’s History and Artistry Exhibit

SCAA Staff

SCAA presents an Art Exhibit Celebrating Women’s History and their Artistry with The Ladies Preference Exhibit at Rooted Trading Co. on display until May 10, 2022.  Inspiring art by local South Cobb Arts Alliance artist members, McEachern students, and other local artists.

Inspiring Art here on display. The stories behind the ladies’ selected artwork preferences are another dimension of why art is made with love and a purpose. As you look at the art, you will see the inspirations emerge.  Some insights may come directly from the artist as with the words from SCAA Artist Susan Gardner:

Maybelle Carter is the latest creation for my Women in Music series of portraits.  This is a pastel portrait, 23″ x 26″ in size, and created with soft pastels on Mi-Tientes paper.  Perhaps the most influential woman in American Appalachian, Country & even Bluegrass music, she was part of the Carter Family beginning in the late 1920’s who brought unique music from the Appalachian Mountains to the entire country.  A strong woman who truly loved making music, I am fascinated with her courage and creativity – and the fact that she obtained the best guitar available when she could afford it!  This portrait shows her with her beloved 1928 Gibson L-5 guitar, purchased for $275  in 1928.  I’ve met this actual guitar at the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum in Nashville, and have also researched this style guitar at Gruhn Guitars in Nashville where owner George Gruhn played a model like Maybelle’s for me so I could hear what it was that she loved about the sound. While working on this portrait, I mainly listened to her contribution on “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, where she speaks about her songs before playing them with the band… it makes tears come to my eyes every single time. (Of course I had a Carter Family cd to listen to as well.) “

Come enjoy these and other unique art works.  Be sure to consider purchasing original art.
